Meet Sally Nurss, M. Ed.

Sally Nurss with her grandson, HenrySally Nurss, M.Ed. as been working directly with children, parents, and teachers for over 25 years. She is a former preschool teacher and director, and has served on the writing tutorial staff of Erikson Institute's graduate program in child development. She is the author of The Well-Centered Child, a newsletter for parents of children in preschools and daycare centers.

In her own words:

I remember coming home from the hospital with my first baby, sitting down in a rocking chair, gazing into her eyes and thinking, “Now what have I done?”

In those days there wasn’t the wealth of information for parents that there is now; we were new in town, and I lived far from my family. The enormity of my husband and I being totally responsible for this new, vulnerable life seemed overwhelming. But there we were.

I read and reread the section in Dr. Spock on “Crying in the Early Weeks” until the book automatically fell open to those pages. Only later did I come across his famous opening statement, “Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.”  I found that I did know enough, thank goodness, and now that baby has grown up and is a mother herself.

When she and her brother and sister attended a preschool in which parents assisted in the classroom, I discovered that although I might know more than I thought I did, there was still a lot more I wanted to find out. It was that supportive and satisfying classroom experience that led me to study child development and to 30-some years of working with children, parents, and teachers.
